Turkey’s New Constitution: An Opportunity for Religious Freedom

On June 12, 2011, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP) won a third-straight election in Turkey. Campaigning on promises to establish a new constitution, the AKP won a significant majority of the seats, but will have to seek a compromise with opposition parties to pass a new constitution. Such a coalition offers an important opportunity for Turkey to introduce important constitutional measures to better protect religious freedom.
