Uzbek Authorities Crack Down on Religious Activities

Print

19 November 2009

In the city of Karshi in southwestern Uzbekistan, a local Muslim woman was arrested for allegedly arranging religious meetings in her household. Mekhrinisso Hamdamova was appointed by city authorities to work with youth and solve residential conflicts. This position would give her the opportunity to work with the government to carry out religious policy, and the Chief Mufti of Uzbekistan recommended her for the appointment. The state Muslim authority often restricts religious practice (including for Muslims) throughout Uzbekistan. Hamdamova and at least 30 family members were arrested when police officials claimed they were holding a religious meeting in order to incite "religious hatred" and plan an overthrow of the government. Given her position, the arrest is surprising and its meaning is unclear.

Please pray for the release of Merkhrinisso Hamdamova and her family members. Pray also that the Uzbek government will ease restrictions and fines on public or household gatherings. Pray that Uzbek officials will cease discrimination against religious believers in their country.
