SAIS Seminar With IGE's Joshua White
Joshua White, Research Fellow with IGE's Center on Faith & International Affairs, will participate in a panel discussion on Bangladesh on Wednesday, January 28 at 5:00PM at the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington. The session is entitled “The 2008 Bangladesh Elections and Beyond: Democracy, Security and Development.”
For two years, Bangladesh was governed by a central interim administration backed by the military. Parliamentary elections this past December resulted in an overwhelming victory for the Awami League, and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was again sworn into office on Janurary 6th, 2009.
Many questions now face the newly elected government: Can it provide good governance and respect democratic norms? Will it take needed steps to crack down on religious extremists? The purpose of the seminar will be to discuss issues such as these and provide commentary on the future of Bangladesh.
IGE's Joshua T. White, who is also a Ph.D. candidate at the Johns Hopkins SAIS, served as an election observer for the Bangladeshi general elections in December. He had previously served as an observer in Pakistan during the elections of February, 2008. The panel will also include Peter M. Manikas of the National Democratic Institute, and Sajeeb Wazed, advisor to the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh. The event is co-sponsored by the U.S. Bangladesh Advisory Council (USBAC).
