Constitutional Democracy in Africa: Challenges, Best Practices and Opportunities

In recent months, Kenya has experienced civil unrest and turmoil in response to disputed presidential elections. A coalition government has been formed to write a new constitution that addresses the challenges faced by the Kenyan people.

In the context of this transition, the Government of Kenya and the Institute for Global Engagement are hosting an international conference entitled: “Constitutional Democracy in Africa: Challenges, Best Practices and Opportunities.” Kenyan, African and scholars from around the world will share their experience and expertise on this crucial issue.

The conference will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, from August 19 to 22, 2008. The program includes opening remarks by President Mwai Kibaki, a keynote address by the Honorable Martha Karua, the Minister for Justice, National Cohesion, & Constitutional Affairs, a dinner presentation by Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, and closing comments by Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
